<< Hi all,

I'm looking for a benchtop solder fountain rework station for
removing/installing TH connectors and DIP components on

Hello there Matthew!

I've been looking for one too...I'll share what I've found so far. All I'm
really looking for is a basic dynamic solder pot, or solder fountain. One that
has a nozzle design that I can take some stainless steel stock and make my own
sized adaptor to fit whatever I want to rework at the time...something simple
that does take a little more skill on the operators part, and doesn't have all
the "bells and whistles" that say a AirVac unit has. I'm working at a start-up
now, and we don't quite have the money to spend on the "cadillacs"...yet
anyway.

I'm familiar with the AirVac machines because I've worked with them in the
past, and they are very good machines...expensive, but good. But you can
easily spend well over $10,000 by the time you buy all the nozzles you need.
Their WEB page is at:

www.automationsystems.com

They've got a pretty cool website! You go there and the opening page will have
a link to rework and repair which is where you want to go to check out the
AirVac units (they have 4 models). At that same linked page, there will be two
links off of that, one for PTH stuff, and the other for the SMT stuff. Click
the SMT link and it'll take you to a page where there's two video clips, one
is a magnified image a BGA going into reflow, it shows the collapse and
wetting of the spheres...pretty trick! The other video clip is the same thing
but with a CGA.

Now for the "Kmart Blue-light Specials" that I've looked at so far, one is
from a company called Winslow Automation. I guess their claim to fame is their
solder preforms they call "Solder Qwik"...they make preforms for BGA
replacement by the way, that method seems easier to me than trying to print
solder paste with a dinky little munchkin stencil and a squeegee. The model of
the solder pot they sell is called a Model 237, it's just a basic tabletop
solder pot with a pump on it. It's got a 1" X 4" main nozzle, then you make an
adapter for that to size the opening for whatever you want. That sells for
around $4,000. Their WEB page is at:

www.winslowautomation.com

I'm also looking into buying something used too...if I can find something that
works and it's not on it's last legs, that'll be fine by me...I don't need to
have something new and shiny. I can keep you informed of what I'm finding in
my search if you would like me to, 'cause I'm not done lookin' yet...

Oh, before I forget, I just started using a new web search engine that I think
is one of the best ones I've ever used...best of all it's FREE! If you look
for things on the NET, this is the software to have! Just go to:

www.webferret.com

It'll tell you on the page which is the free version, and then download it.
What it does is take your keyword or phrase, and does a search using
Altavista, AOL NetFind, Euroseek, Excite, Infoseek, LookSmart, Lycos,
Magellan, Yahoo, and Veronica all at the same time!! Then it starts spitting
out all the links it finds in one list that you just double click on the URL
and you're there! I can type in the most obscure thing I can think of and wait
5 minutes and have 300-500 addresses to check out.
