Hi Dennis,

I'm not sure of what type ultrasonic cleaning systems you're interested
in, but there's two systems that I'm familiar with, one is SmartSonic, and the
other PMR. Both are fairly large systems used to clean stencils. Each company
uses their own "environmently freindly" detergent and water as the cleaning
solution.

SmartSonic has been around for a while, and is the system that most
people are familiar with. It performs well, they were the first to come up
with a ultrasonic cleaner for stencils.

PMR is the the "new kid" on the block. It's the same sort of system as
the SmartSonic, but there are a few improvements. One, it has two tanks
incorporated into it, a wash, AND a rinse tank. The SmartSonic only has one
tank, so the water can get pretty "gunky" after a while. The PMR also has
incorporated a filtering system into their cleaners. It's got a pump that you
can turn on and filter the water through 5-micron filters, there's also what
they call a solder trap to capture the paste that's been cleaned from the
stencils before it gets to the 5-micron filters and plugs them up. Supposedly,
I've been told that the water doesn't have to changed near as often as it does
in the SmartSonic, and I have heard that the water can go as long as 3-4
months...but I'll believe that when I see it.

In the past, I've always worked with SmartSonics ('cause they were the
only ones out there...), but now at the start-up I'm at, we've got a PMR...I
think we may have bought the first one on the west coast. I've had it for a
couple of months and it's working great so far. Haven't changed the water yet,
it still is looking good...but then again, we haven't had a whole lot of jobs
yet...(I'm starting to get bored).

CAE Blackstone makes the ultrasonic generators for the machines, and
they've been into ultrasonics for decades. That's one thing these machines are
not lacking in one little bit, that's POWER. The generators put out close to
2,000 watts of ultrasonic energy...I think that'll clean the apertures fairly
well!

I found out it also does a great job on wave solder fingers and flux
tanks too! I PM'ed our wave solder last week and decided to really spiff the
machine up, so I wanted to see if it could clean some of the baked on crud
that's on the fingers. It looks like I put brand new fingers on our wave...
