Rick, Brad, et al,
We have a Nicolet NXR1400 and have no problem at all seeing voids. Right
now I have a small BGA board in the chamber at 60 watts, 84 kilovolts and a
camera distance of 1.5 to 2 inches and I am having no problem at all seeing
voids.

Now opens are another matter altogether. You can sometimes infer opens from
the size of the apparent solder joint, but it is tricky and not a sure
thing. The 3D Nicolet or HP systems are needed for that. I presume Fein
Focus also make a 3D system as well. Also, a few months ago I put out a
Technet query to see if it were possible to use acoustic spectroscopy to
find these type of opens, but the consensus I received back from my fellow
Techneters was that the depth penetration needed was too great for this
technique to work. I was hoping it would do the trick because I would
rather spent $200K then $500K!.

regards,
Bev Christian
