Rick,
Others have already mentioned this, so I will just back them up. When
I implemented BGA a couple years ago, I looked at all the X-ray machines on
the market and none could see voids. I took boards with known opens (found
at test) and we checked them on Glenbrook machines, HP, and Nicholia
(spelling?) and found you would be able to see the absence of a ball or a
short, but not opens, voids, or cracked solder joints. Now, the one
response talked of an HP 5dx. This machine was not out then, we looked at
the HP 4. This new one may be able to see all the defects. I did just see
some pictures from an X-ray yesterday that showed voids VERY clearly. They
were pictures of SMT terminal contact solder joints, but the voids were
clear as day. I asked what machine was used to get them, they are supposed
to let me know. I am sure it is a high end machine. Glenbrook makes
good and affordable X-ray that can do certain things, but see an open or
void, won't do it due to not being powerful enough.

Good luck,

Subject: [TN] Glenbrook x-ray??

Hi,

We're starting to look into x-ray systems, specifically for BGA inspection.
Units by Glenbrook caught my attention due to their low cost relative to
other units on the market. Anybody have any feedback, positive or negative
on their products?

I'd also appreciate any other insight you might care to share regarding
other vendors and BGA X-ray.

Thanks.
