Bruce,

Hot bar soldering can be very effective on fine pitch SMT.  The two down sides I'm aware of are (1) not a
mass reflow process, (2) potential for creep rupture failure due to the leads being forced down on the pads
while the solder reflows and solidifies.  Hughes put out a comprehensive guide to hot bar soldering related
to their hot bar equipment, you might consider contacting them.
