Several times over the years I've seen copper deposit on gold through
some sort of auto-catalytic process (perhaps a local galvanic reaction?)
when the copper concentration got too high in an acidic cleaner. It
looked exactly as you described. Changing the cleaner more frequently
solved the problem.
