     I feel compelled to throw my two cents in.

     Doug McKean and Ray Smith (as well as others) are correct, the return
     path flux follows the path of least impedance (not necessarily
     resistance).  By placing a gap in the return path, the flux must find
     the next lowest impedance path home, thus coupling onto things you
     would never even imagine.
