Sometimes a manufacturer will want to remove the actual part number and
substitute another one to make it more difficult to reverse engineer a
product.

I know of one manufacturer who bought several of a competitors products,
re-designed the printed board and ordered all parts from the purchased
assemblies. Went into production without testing -- ka pow -- they
didn't function.

Their competitor had taken an IC and removed the markings indicating it
was a ROM and re-labeled the part as a J-K flip-flop (or something like
that). The counterfeitter discovered this too late and went bankrupt
--- yeh!
