Hi Jerry
Can understand your goal , the auto verification does make life easier
in our mixes .
1
GenRad makes a machine for exactly the purpose you're after .
It checks file against actual , = placement : type , miss , accuracy ,
polarity , etc. . on pass/no pass based on tolerancing windows you
assign to it . That way you don't need operator at all ; checks all
boards automatically ; interacting with your CAD files .
Called GR Vision Optical Inspection System ; check ;
http://www.genrad.com ; or ring 1-978-589-7000
2
Yes, selection of a wide planar lens coupled with HRes. camera does have
a lot to do with it .
For a man solving and building on the floor from parts :
> on this subject check Edmund Scientific Optical section ;
http://www.edsci.com ;
relatively cheap lenses, cameras and drivers galore , switching sensors
you pick anywhere .
If you want to work it yourself ; surely cheaper and likely more fitting
your task .
3
The only reason why I delayed decision on the GR (still did not get back
to me) :
I asked for an integrated post paste with a second post place inspection
system .
GenRad could not reflect on the post paste inspection task , only on
post place .
And the laser 3D scans I did not fancy , for a No. of reasons .

When you finish playing with optics ; there is this Colour Image
Analysis system called Video Pro 32 :
Very interesting analytical and statistical tool (software) , = process
SPC limited regional tolerances build ups , likes ,
say you flag dimensional variations on suppliers for a specific
component group up to a limited % allowable , keeps tally and files
within set parameters ;
the algorithmic segmentation of colours, shapes, statistics, and set
limits solved the problem of paste inspection in ONE shoot with ease,
and SPC visibility .
Literally you can have a documented process file on every board should
you require it (just add a t. profile).
This one is Faulding Imaging product ; available through Olympus optics
:
Direct : phone : 61 03 265 5400 ; fax 61 03 558 9656 ; = Australia .
Try local Olympus shop .

If you'd like the specs faxed , let me know your fax No.
Reading through the application sampler in the electronic,
pharmaceutical , metallurgy, polymers , etc. regions would give you
miles clearer understanding of what the animal is actually about , the
lateral integrity focused on the task of analytical inspection is very
neat and simple .

Well , hope didn't bore you to death ; let me know if you get stuck , so
far you're on the right track .

See you

>Hello out there in cybertechland,

>We have a high mix captive OEM assembly operation, probably build about 1
>kits weekly of 50-500 pcs. A problem is the verification of SMT machine
>setup on first article.
>
>We have many population option variants, so the boards have RAM sites, etc.
>which are either populated or not based on configuration.
>
>When the first board is off the P&P machine, we typically give it a 5
>minute visual check against a "checkpaper" drawing which is marked with
>many cute color codes to indicate the proper component locations, along
>with hand written markings to show the component brand and value.
>
>I have a goal to make this all based on video or digital images. I am
