We have been in the same situation before, and scrapped
the idea due to cost.

We found it to be easier to run a single board all the
way through the process, and test it at the end. If the test board
passed, each reel/tray of parts was labeled and signed by the operator
each time it was changed. Finally, the P&P machine in question was not
used for any other purpose unless absolutely necessary. Should the
machine be disturbed, we started all over again.

This process kept problems to a minimum.

                Hope this helps!

                                Subject: [TN] ASSY: Video camera
for digitized image capture

                        Hello out there in cybertechland,

We have a high mix captive OEM assembly
operation, probably build about 1
kits weekly of 50-500 pcs. A problem is the
verification of SMT machine
                        setup on first article.

We have many population option variants, so the
boards have RAM sites, etc.
which are either populated or not based on
configuration.

When the first board is off the P&P machine, we
typically give it a 5
minute visual check against a "checkpaper"
drawing which is marked with
many cute color codes to indicate the proper
component locations, along
with hand written markings to show the component
brand and value.

I have a goal to make this all based on video or
digital images. I am
looking for a suitable CCD video camera which
can resolve image details and
produce an image about 2X normal size on a
monitor to be installed right on
the SMT line. If we do video captures on each
board, we could then compare
to the image on the monitor.

We have tried cheap digital cameras (not enough
resolution) and our CCD
video camera has good resolution, but the max
image size on the zoom lens
we have is about one inch.

If you have been down this road, suggestions
would be welcome.

                        regards,
