Angie,

What kind of terminals? Bifurcated, pierced, turret, or cup? Are they
silver plated, gold plated or solder plated? Or some other plating?
What kind of flux are you using in your soldering operation?

When teaching soldering classes, I found that tarnished silver plated
terminals (turret and bifurcated) were difficult to solder to using R and
RMA fluxes. I never tried a pre-tin with a stonger flux, but that might
work if you can insure sufficient cleaning afterwards.

The pierced terminals usually had a different plating, the composition of
which I do not know for sure. I seldom had a problem with those.

The cup terminals were gold plated and one has to do a gold removal tinning
to avoid gold embrittlement. I don't recall seeing and "tarnished" gold
terminals.

Good luck,
Charlie B.

Subject: [TN] terminals tarnished (dull)

To all,
Looking for some information on terminals. The vendor (fab house) has
installed terminals on the fab and some are dull and tarnished. My
quality dept. feels they should be nice and shinny. No where in IPC does
it state the condition of the part. Can anyone help? Do we need to tin
the part are they OK?
Thank you in advanced
Angie
