Hello there,
It's been a while, but we were building these little hybrid daughter-
cards that were about .75" X 1.5" and were in a panel. We used the preforms
you spoke of to solder what were like header pins with small a 90-degree bend
at the top that soldered into the hybrid. This pin arrangement was used
installing it into SIP sockets in the motherboard.
The preforms worked great, saved us a ton of time as we reflowed them at
the same time as the SMT. We did use additional flux with them however, it
seemed that there wasn't enough in the preforms, plenty of solder volume
though. For the most part, it soldered pretty good without additional flux,
but it was worth the little time it took to add a little flux after the
preform and pins were installed to avoid having to do any touch-up.
