NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN ADVERTISEMENT NOR AN I AFFILIATED WITH ANY FLUX
MANUFACTURERS!!!

In 1994, as a result of concerns from several military program managers and
materials engineers, a joint team was formed with the Naval Air Warfare Center
(China Lake), Hughes Missile Systems (Tuscon, AZ) and Texas Instruments
(Lewisville, TX) to address the issues regarding the use of HF1189 and HF1189A
water soluble flux on stranded wire. The key issue in this task was to
determine if flux entrapment under the insulation will induce corrosion and
impact long term reliability.

On June 15, 1994, a memo was issued from the Deputy Commander for Research and
Development (Department of the Navy) with the results of the evaluation. The
results were "None of the data indicates that there will be any problems with
reliability or performance when stranded wires are soldered with either of the
subject fluxes."

The memo is four pages long... the detailed reports from the various
organizations total about 50 pages. I will be happy to FAX the Navy memo to
whom ever sends me their FAX number, sorry, but the detailed reports are too
lengthy.
