JoAnn,

Paul is right that these vendors make it much easier to operate
efficiently with a heterogeneous line of "best-of-breed" machines.

I don't know what your environment is like, but if you are running
multiple products everyday like most folks, I'd be concerned about a
vendor's ability to schedule, as well as optimize, multiple products at
one time over your line.
You are missing out on a lot of time/money savings if you can't bring
numerous products into your system and have it's algorithms optimize
based on what your "real" requirements, not what they might suggest your
requirements ought to be. There are solutions out there that can look at
the entire day/week's work load.

Also, another point that I'd keep in mind is the size, stability, and
visionary direction of a company.
There are a lot of new technologies coming on the scenes that are allow
our industry to radically evolve the ways in which we've traditionally
solved the challenges of design transfer/new product
introduction/application interoperability/etc.

Make sure that your vendor is active with the numerous standards boards
working to streamline PCB manufacturing.

It is important that they have a good solution today, but it is equally
important that they have a next generation product in the hopper that
incorporates the latest technologies to give you customizable, flexible,
and easy-to-use solutions.

I've heard that Mitron was bought by GenRad and has since acquired ICC
(the MES company).
This positions then very well to be a one-stop-shopping vendor capable
of meeting all of a PCB manufacturer's needs.
So, think about what you want today, but also think about what you may
need in the future.

Kathy
