Paul, the IPC Repairability Committee and Task Groups have just completed two new
documents that will provide you the information you need.

IPC-7711 Rework of Electronic Assemblies provides procedures to remove and replace
most components used on circuit boards today, as well as removal and replacement of
the conformal coatings that may be on the board. The 82 members of the industry task
group that developed this document were lead by Dan Foster of Pace and Peggi Blakley
of Crane Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center.

IPC-7721 Repair and Modification of Printed Boards and Electronics Assemblies"
provides procedures to remove/replace conformal coating, solder resist (probably the
green stuff you removed), repair damaged board material, conductors, traces & pads,
and plated through holes. The 88 members of this task group were lead by Jeff Ferry
of Circuit Technology Center and Christine Miller of FORE Systems.

The task groups did a great job on developing these documents, with easy to
understand step by step procedures and many pictures (lots in color) to help with the
explanation. Both books are in 3-ring binders so that company unique procedures can
be added, or individual procedures removed for use at a work bench. The price of the
manuals includes two years of free updating service for new procedures as they are
developed.

Paul, you have taken on an ambitious project that is not without pitfalls. Your
description and explanation suggest that you don't have a strong background in this
type of work. If the board has inner conductor layers, you have a lot of work in
front of you. You are dealing with high speed digital signals and servo controls
that must not falter or the future recordings/playbacks will not be good. I'm hoping
that you hear from someone that may offer assistance to you, but I don't expect that
the end project will come cheap. $1400 is a LOT of money to pay for even a very high
end VCR. The fanciest machines with every bell/whistle aren't over $600 at most
electronics discount stores. You may need to evaluate the value of your friendship
and go shopping.

Please help.

Problem: Broken VCR circuit board from shock of computer monitor landing on top of
VCR while moving electronics in car during rush-hour traffic (sudden stop.) Plus, it
is my friends $1400 VCR that I broke. Circuit board broke into 2 pieces. Copper
tracers(?) broke. Need to reconnect tracers.

Picture: I have uploaded a picture of the broken board (now epoxied together) at
http://www.digitalnebula.com/vcr.jpg You should be able to see the copper tracers
as I have etched away all the green stuff, and epoxied the 2 halves together.

Solutions: The only things I have found so far to fix it are "Pretinned solid bus
wire", 24-gauge, $1.79 from Radio Shack, or a "Etch your own PC board" kit, $13.99,
from Radio Shack also.

Available tools: Radio Shack solder gun, wire strippers, and about $50.

Questions:
What is the best way to repair it?
What is the most economical way to repair it?
How should I do it?
Is there a good Web site or manual out there that would help me?

Thanks you for your help.

Sincerely,

Paul Millington
