What are you using for schem capture?  Viewlogic has a really nice BOM utility  called Partslister.
You format the BOM anyway you like and read the ascii text file in a text editor.  It comes with a
nice preview window as well so you experiment with the formatting switches.  Otherwise I'd suggest
looking into exporting data directly from PADS and reading it into MS Excel as a comma delimited
table.  That way, you're avoiding the risk of typos.  All you have to deal with is the translation
of the data fields intact.
