Hello All!

Say, I just want to thank all of you for the info that you fed back to me
about my DI situation, it sure helps to be able to "bounce" things off this
group!

Well, I'm gonna get a rental bed (actually 2, plumbed in series so I can
run one while the other one is being changed). It's not that expensive, only
$30.00 for each column.

I spoke with a gentleman named Peter Forrest of Pacific Water Systems
(408-224-4600) and he really knows his stuff! He taught me something that I
wasn't aware of until today, and that's why I thought I'd share on this the
forum...there's gotta be a few others out there who are also in the Bay Area
that might like to know about this...

I was correct about our water supply here in the Bay Area, it does come
from Hetch Hetchy...some of the time anyway. Each city here has it's own
options of where it gets it water from.

     We're going to be in Sunnyvale, and they get water from one of 3 sources;
1. Hetch Hetchy, 2. Wells, or 3. Imported from supplies other than Hetch
Hetchy (whatever that means?).

From what Peter told me, Hetch Hetchy water is the best of the 3...it's
not all that great (90ppm), but it is the best of the three. Come to find out
though, some time between the months of November and January, the water supply
district shuts down the supply from Hetch Hetchy to do maintenance on the
water supply lines. They could be shut down for 2-weeks or 2-months, it
depends on how much work they've got to do. During that time is when we get
the well water, or water from the "other" source.

The water purity from either of those sources to say the least, (in
Kathy's words) Suck! Well, my words too... hehehe. It runs right around
500ppm!!

Peter was able to tell me how much DI water I could get from each 3.6 cu
ft mixed bed based on the 90ppm water vs. 500ppm water before needing another
bed, and it's 5,000 gallons vs. 1,000 gallons! Quite a dramatic difference I
would say!!

He also says that when they've cut Hetch Hetchy off you can walk into a
lot of the assembly companies around here that are closed looped and see foam
spittin' out washers and every stuff! He says he always gets a bunch of calls
then too from customers that are kinda miffed because they may only get a
quarter of the life out of the beds that they normally get, and they blame
Pacific Water Systems for giving them bad mixed beds. That's because they
aren't aware of the varying water quality.

Pete says that it can get so bad sometimes that if I was to use my mixed
beds in my loop, they would be working harder to DI the tap water than they
would be with the recirculated water used to wash the boards!! No wonder I
don't like drinking the water here!

One last reason I'm getting rental beds is that the beds in the loop are
what's called "hot mixed beds" since it deals with heated water, and will
deplete faster and are more expensive than ones that deal with room
temperature water...also the beds in the machine are designed to MAINTAIN a
certain level of purity, not establish AND maintain it...

Sorry I got so long-winded there!

                       -Steve Gregory-
