I don't like the environment, either.

But consider the following points.

1) Wire harnesses are expensive
2) At one time, the highest failure mode in automotive electronics was the
wire harness/connector system
3) Long harnesses make it difficult to work on the car
4) At a previous employer, we were developing a PCB that mounted inside the
engine!!!. On the engine block using 63/37 has been done for 10 years or
so. (I think).
5) Shorter signal lines can have reduced noise.
6) Shorter signal lines have less voltage/current drop.

Hey there ya'll,

Jim Blankenhorn's SMT Plus also has the books mentioned by Phil, you
can
check the titles that he carries at www.smtplus.com...

As a side-note and a question, I've been reading this discussion with
a
lot of interest. Mainly because I know nothing about these types of
assemblies
and solders...I've never had to build anything like it before.

So excuse me if this sounds like a dumb question (but I'm gonna ask
anyway...), why in the heck are the printed circuit assemblies used in
automobiles mounted on what's got to be the absolute WORST place to mount
one;
a hot, vibrating engine? Only other places I can think of that might be
worse
than that is someplace like the top of a piston or shoved up the tailpipe!
(...I better not speak too fast, maybe they are! GRIN)

Seems to me that the place to mount the electronics would be at the
very
least up on the firewall in the engine compartment, or better yet, inside
the
passenger compartment...there's gotta be some reason they don't, huh?...or
isn't there?
