Alan,

I don't have the reference to hand here, but I think it was Roger Wild
(of IBM) that published some very strong evidence for life enhancement in
Brazing & Soldering (forerunner of Soldering and Surface Mount Technology)
approx ten years ago. His hypothesis was that the conformal coat provided
mechanical support, but I suspect reduction of corrosion/oxidation must
also play a significant part, so the field service benefits might be even
higher than accelerated test results indicate.
