Hi TechNet -

The 1997 IPC Surface Finishes Conference was very successful in generating
both technical data exchange and useful discussions of alternative surface
finishes between fabricators, users, and customers. I believe that is the
goal of the 1998 Surface Finishes Conference also. HASL finishes are quite
robust in many assembly operations but can be equally non-robust in other
assembly operations. In addition there are a number of IPC committees (e.g.
ANSIJ-STD-002/003, and the Alternative Solderable Finishes task group) that
have an active interest in the latest developments in the alternative
finishes activities.  The statement " When you stop trying to improve and
start coasting you generally go one direction - down hill" also comes to
mind. Hope this is helpful.

Obviously there are no real vendors to gain from the promotion of HASL
finish, that boring old stuff which works fine for me, with fine pitch,=

BGAs, 12 layers, 10,000 terminations etc...
