Hi Chris,

Some of my work is in customer support for conformal coating products,
amongst other things, and more and more extensively the question asked of me
is 'is your coating material compatible with our no-clean flux?'.

In the past this was a difficult question to answer, and generally I was
able to explain to the customer why the residues they were sealing in caused
effects largely unaffected by which coating material they sealed them in
with!

If the customer is prepared to do some SIR testing to validate their process
with coating included, then they get a better answer, and we have done this
for several customers now.

A significant amount of our customers choose to coat over no-clean residues
without any form of validation. Presumably they then rely upon SIR and other
tests performed by the flux vendor as an assurance of reliability. The
standard SIR test is of course not done with other process materials (such
as a coating) being present.

Best Regards
