Hello!
We've provided this news to many IT recruiters currently using
our service, and it has been suggested that we try to send this
important information out to IT consulting companies also,
since it is affecting your industry...so here it is (if you are
not a "consulting company", please accept my apology for
receiving this by mistake!):

For many employers who hire foreign workers, the fact that the
cap for H-1B workers is close to being reached, is of major
importance! As you may know, a total of 65,000 H-1B visas are
issued annually (fiscal year ends on Sept. 30). A push in
congress to increase the allotment has been going on for several
months now. One industry that backs the increase is the high
tech industry! If what the industry reports (almost 350,000 job
openings), the reported critical shortage of skilled high tech
workers available in the US has made it imperative that the
number of H-1B visas be increased!

Please note that those foreign workers already here working on an
H-1B visa and desiring to simply change employers, are not
subject to the cap. Only those arriving initially on an H-1B
visa or changing visa status to H-1B (i.e. student or tourist
changing to H-1B) will be subject to the cap.

For those of you who do hire foreign workers, it will interest
you to know that as of 3/31/98, the number of H-1B visas used for
the 1998 fiscal year (so far) has reached: 49,854. This figure
has been reported by the American Immigration Lawyers
Association. The cap last year was reached in August, '97. This
year, it has been predicted that the cap will be reached in May
or June, if an increase is not approved. Otherwise, the usual
65,000 visas will again be available effective 10/1/98.

If you would like more detailed information about the work being
done in congress to increase the number of visas, please e-mail
me at [log in to unmask] and request an "H-1B update". And, if you
want to be included on a list to be notified of upcoming
immigration news that may affect you, you can also e-mail me and
request "Immigration News Updates".
