OK, folks, I know that we all have to struggle at producing a
manufacturable, testable, functional and mechanically correct PCB
assembly in as few layers and days as physically possible. I also know
that it is healthy to vent about the many frustrations in our daily
struggle. I just want to remind everyone that as an experienced
hand-taper and hand designer, I am elated at the progress we all have
made since those days. The hardware that supports our trade was designed
by some of our own. Granted, we do need a centralized method of airing
the PCB design tool dirty laundry. As the end users and those typically
consulted to some degree on the choice thereof, we do have a large
potential in holding those accountable who design and market our tools.

The question this thread raises is this: How can we more effectively
influence the development and maintenance of the tools that our success
is so dependent upon? In pondering this question, lets not loose sight
of the tremendous progress that has been made in the AEDA market thus
far. Let's also be prepared to give a detailed list of not only the
things we dislike, but those features that we appreciate. If we form an
angry mob issuing harsh remarks and curt demands, we will dissolve the
vital relationship of partnership and confidence between ourselves and
the software developers and will more closely resemble a rowdy crowd of
disgruntled union automakers. Our success as professionals is dependent
upon a team relationship between ourselves and the AEDA developers.
Don't we all develop product? How would we have our end users approach
us concerning their opinion (good or bad) on the product we develop?
Would we prefer an uprising or a relaxed conversation with no personal
attacks? We have more in common with software developers than we seem to
be acknowledging here. In my humble opinion, the glass is half full.
