What you are describing sounds like a dual ink cartridge plotter, James.
Most 600 X 300 inkjet plotters use two cartridges to interlace the 600
DPI axis. The probability of both cartridges becoming empty at the same
time is minimal, so the condition of one skipping before the other runs
out is typical. This was the case for the HP Design Jet 600 I used at my
previous employer. Great plotter, but I simply had to re-plot the sheet
where one of the two cartridges ran dry. I used it only for plotting
drawings only. May I suggest a "B" size laser printer for all of your
artwork check plots? The images are clearer, plot faster and you can
even use transparent film (at least for "A" size plots) if you so
desire.
