We use Cadence products; Concept for schematic capture
and Allegro for board design. I simply maintain a file
called newproperties.dat which consists of our part number,
Concept model, Allegro model, and some miscellaneous information.
I have around 4000 entries in this file. Running the "front
end tools to Allegro" (fet2a) creates a modified pstchip.dat file
that now contains the Allegro model associated with the
correct "Concept model"/"Our part number" pair. fet2a also
reports on parts that are not in the system file. I enter the
missing information.

If I need to have something unique on the board, i.e. an
intrinsic (basically a combination pads and/or etch model)
or a unique mounting requirement: heatsink, extra mounting
holes, or laydown/stand up orientation of a standard part,
I will use a local file that appends or overrides the
selection in the system newproperties.dat file.

We use generic Concept models, i.e. res, cap, ind, fuse,
etc for the majority of out discretes. Our part number gets
associated with them at the schematic. All of our ic's
have a specific Concept model with the part number built
in. We could also build in the Allegro model but the
newproperties.dat file works well.

Using our own part number is like a one to many association.
Our own part number represents several different part numbers
from different vendors.

Sample of newproperties.dat file:
