George,

Don't get me wrong, I think the idea is valiant. But, a couple of words
keep coming up, commitment and involvement. You're right about the
benchmark results might not be "true", but who does benchmarks
anymore? Here was one done at the Designer Conference, and we
should disregard it? We should find some way to build from it. Sure it
was done by a team of AEs (except PADS, it was done by one AE!), but
look at the final marks. Some a fairly disappointing!

I'd like to see some involvement on a functionality list, but I'm not holdig my
breath. I attend the Cadence User's Group in So Cal, and it still is only a
small fraction of the total user base. Why? I don't know, but I also don't
understand why some folks don't want to show up.

The roundtable idea. Good idea. Would you be willing to moderate the
session, and track the issues, and make something happen? We'd all
love it.

Mitch

I don't think benchmark results will give even most of the results a
designer might want to see.

Even though the benchmarks are useful for organizing software by
features
and performance, I think we need to go a step further if this really gets
off the ground. Benchmarks are done by people who know the
software package
they are using _very_ well and don't really address ease of use, training
curve, and applicibility to the task.

The only real way to do what needs to be done would have discussion
amoung
the _users_ of different software package about a particular feature.
That
way all the users would get input from the people "in the trenches"
rather
than getting a benchmark done by employees of an EDA company who
just MIGHT
have some bias toward a particular package (:-o

Maybe more of a roundtable thing, maybe at one of the conferences???
