I very much agree with Ed on this, 274X gerber is the way to go.  Also include
a copy or report of the aperture list to the board shop so that they may
verify that the conversion is correct.  The board shop should always verify
the apertures input from 274X with the aperture list provided.
Ed's thoughts on CAM departments are right on the money, having worked in and
supervised a CAM dept. I know they can be one of the primary bottlenecks in a
PCB shop.  Good CAM operators are hard to find and most (in my experience) CAM
operators are not designers or trained in electronics but have come from a
programming background.
