The bible for pressfit is Bellcore TR-NWT-000078 (esp. chapters 4, 6, 7).

(my $.02)
- Spec and verify the plated thru hole carefully, using the connector
manufacturer's hole specification (e.g. a common .040 finished hole spec is
drill .0453 +/- .001, min copper .0012, finished hole .040" +/- .002 or
.003, hole to hole true position tolerance w/in connector pattern .0001").
Get the connector supplier spec!
- Qual per Bellcore insertion/retention forces and microsection analysis of
hole wall deformation
- Monitor qual periodically in production (Bellcore forces and microsection)
- Monitor/Control insertion forces and Z-stops in process

<fwiw> We've had good success w/ pressfit generally but there are plenty of
ways to mess it up and get in trouble (i've got the scar tissue to prove it
:-) ). Personal bias based on our experience and studies done by Litton is
the compliant C section Litton/Winchester developed. It's used widely by
other manufacturers now. Engineering crew at Litton Interpak understands
the basic science and how to do it right as well as anyone I know.
