Greetings!
What a solder thief is, is a extra pad that's placed adjacent to the last
pads of IC locations that as the PCB is exiting the solder wave during wave
soldering, will tend to pull the solder away in a fashion to avoid a solder
bridge. This is a function of the solders surface tension, wetting, and the
way it separates from the area where it has just formed the joints...it does
work too. That's provided that the board is within the rest of guidelines that
are used to design boards that wave solder well.
