Mr. Fritz really gave you a good idea, which I want to expand on, to give you
some ideas about it.

To get rid of the Formaldehyde, you can add a lot, say 5+% of free caustic
soda, and give the bath some time, or heat to speed the reaction.

The formaldehyde converts to a combination of Methanol and Formic acid.  The
caustic then neutralizes, and is itself neutralized by the Formic Acid.   This
is clew.   Be certain that the bath maintains a good excess of Caustic, or
else the reaction will stop, and you will never get rid of all the caustic.

And good luck, we think we have some seriously over the top rules about waste
disposal here in California.  You are giving us a good perspective adjustment.
