Ed - The Japanese first used SMT in full production in 1977. I myself
first became involved in SMT in 1979, and we produced the first
production PC Boards (mostly on polyimide) in 1980. Initially, we used
(2) leadless ceramic chip carriers and some chip resistors. The initial
production runs were double-sided reflow with one LCC on one side and
the other on the opposite side. We used vapor phase for our reflow
soldering. The PC board assemblies were very high reliability since they
were used in heart pacemakers.
