Just another data point. We recently purchased a Cyberoptics LSMII for
this purpose. We looked at and demoed an array of microscope focus based
units and found them to be very subjective between operators. Once the
lines that the operator overlays on the laser stipe image were adjusted to
approx. the same width as the laser image, repeatability was much better
with the cyberoptics unit. Having 4 different operators align on the same
gauge block target 10 times apiece, the variation wasn't more than +/- a
couple tens of a mil.
