We recently purchased an LSM (laser-section-microscope) from Cyber-optics,
and I have not yet had a chance to do a Gage R&R test. But, the previous
method we were using, an optical microscope with digital z-axis, reveales a
"horrible" gage R&R between operators. Everyone's vision "sees" things
differently, and of course which solder peak do you focus on?
The LSM does remove some of the quesswork for the operators, allowing them
to use the laser "stripe" to see more of an average across the printed
pattern, and we can auto-download the data for SPC purposes with the
LSM-Wizard software. It IS very important how it is processed...you want to
try for the same pad type/size being measured from ass'y to ass'y (0805
works well), and education on where the pad edge is, is VERY important.
From the amount of use we have had, the repeatability already seems to be
much better then the "scope" system ('course, the Gage R&R will reveal all).
All-in-all, we like the system!
(standard "non-affiliated"/non-promo/non-sales" disclaimer inserted here).
