Hi Ed,

The amp-hour consumption rate, of gold, and any other electroplating
process, depends on the current efficiency of the particular bath. i.e. the
amount of current (amp-hours) actually used for metal deposition, as a
percentage of the current supplied by the rectifier. This efficiency or
inefficiency, must be factored into the calculation for overall
consumption. Getting back to your question, gold plating processes vary
from supplier to supplier and there are different bath types, such as hard
gold and soft or pure gold, the efficiencies vary widely, as well, there
are high speed baths for automatic lines that also vary in efficiencies.

To verify the amp-hour consumption calculations, perform a cathode
effficiency analysis on the bath and base your calculations on the
determined percentage. Additionally, even though your gold supplier states
a particular efficiency, the actual value may be off by as much as 5 % or
sometimes even greater, depending on your operating conditions, and it will
decrease with age.
