We have the Direct Imaging system here. Gerber files are input into a standard PC, and it uses a wax printer to mask sheets of copper
clad polyamide. These are etched , cut out, then aligned on a layer of ft4 material with glue between the layers, which is heated to
bond them. Pins & tubes are inserted to join the layers together. Drilling takes place at various stages. They claim 5/5 resolution
is possible but I haven't tried anything that fine. Soldermask is an optional stage.
