Are you using MS Outlook?
It's so-called "MAPI" interface is a fragile program that gets upset by
anything.
I used to get the same message after retrieving e-mail from Outlook and
then trying to launch my browser.
I had made the mistake of buying release 1 of MS-anything and, true to
form, it's loaded with bugs...  I got the latest Outlook patch from the MS
web site & it helped.  I still have occasional modem conflicts - now I just
re-boot.
