Chris,
Have you rechecked the system properties to see if there are any conflicts
with the address, interrupt, or DMA?

I am biased toward extenal modems.  I have been using a USR Courier
V-everything for about 2 years now. I have not had problems with this
modem. Last time I checked the test reports it still ranked up there.
However it is not inexpensive.  But then neither is your time, when
fighting these problems.
