Just a quick note on technical books that I feel is worthy of mention. A
large percentage of the technical books in print are edited texts that are
the work of many authors and not a single person.(there are also many single
author books as well, of course) The point being that we tend to lose sight
of this and credit only the editor who may or may not have written any of
the text beyond the introduction but who knew well his subject and then
enlisted a number of technical experts to write the book chapters in their
areas of expertise. It is those chapter authors who are all too often
forgotten. It is a small point perhaps but I think it is important to
distinguish, without denigration, the difference between editing and
authoring a technical book. Printed Circuit Handbook was edited by Clyde
Coombs and is the work of many of our respected colleagues, remember to
credit them for their chapters. In contrast, Surface Mount Technology
Principles and Practices was authored solely by Ray Prasad. Both are
excellent books but the effort required by those whose names grace the
covers are markedly different...
Cheers!
