Hi 'ehb',
Where do you think the consultants that Joe Fjelstad mentioned in his "[TN]
Thank you all!" message, as well as others of course, came from. They are all
engineers with long experience in the trenches, having solved product design
and manufacturing problems for many years for employers, and continue to do so
mow as consultants. They have for some reason or other (down sizing,
retirement, had-enough-with-the-rat-race, etc.) chosen to forego corporate
life, but are unwilling to fully retire and want to share their experience and
expertise. And I can assure you, that none of them are "people who sit in
offices and never solve problems or design in solutions on the shop floor or
work with real products."
They are—at least in the USA—widely known, because they have been, and still
are, active in organizations like IPC, SMTA, ISHM, etc. volunteering their
time and effort. Bob Willis, is as known in the UK as some of the others are
known over here in the USofA.
Consultants, as a whole, are very cost effective, because they bring their
expertise to their clients, there is no learning curve, the issues are
addressed, the problems solved—all in a couple of days.
