"Getter" is also the material placed in vacuum tubes to
remove the last traces of oxygen and other gases to
avoid reaction with the filament.

From an old electronics dictionary:

"An alkali metal introduced into a vacuum tube during
manufacture.  It is fired after the tube has been evacuated,
to react chemically with and eliminate any remaining gases.
The getter then remains inactive inside the tube.  The
silvery deposit sometimes seen on the inside of the glass
envelope is due to getter firing".
