Subject: BGA Sockets                                      1997.12.0211:10 AM

Hi TechNetters,

I am searching for BGA sockets which do not involve reflowing the BGA to an
interposer type carrier. Here is the desired solution:

1) BGA component lands on board (1.27 mm pitch)
2) Mount BGA socket to board via reflow (using local reflow)
3) Snap or clip BGA into BGA socket (coplanarity may be an issue)

Does such a BGA socket exist ?  The objective is not to reflow the BGA.

The only solution which I have found involves reflowing the BGA to an
"interposer".  This interposer has a male pin grid array on the bottom. A
female pin grid array adapter is mounted to the BGA component lands on the
board by reflow.  This results in a PGA type socket where BGAs can easily be
removed from the board.  I have identified two suppliers for this type of
solution.  Please contact me off-line if this interests anyone.

If anyone knows of a BGA socket which does not involve reflowing the BGA, I
would be most interested in hearing about it.
