Jackie,
Please let me have your SnailMail address, I have a lot of info to send you.
However, if you have access to back issues of Circuits Assembly, September
1996 if my memory is not playing tricks, I have a paper entitled "Chemicals v
Electronics" that you will find useful.
In precis, anyone who tells you that their "coating is compatible with a
no-clean" is giving you grossly misleading information. The synergistic
effects/influences of each process chemistry is not understood! New test
methods are available and evolving to assist in understanding these influences
on the RELIABILITY rather than the cleanliness of assemblies - SIR testing (I
just heard regular TechNetters groan: Not again? - Sorry, Yes!)
My understanding is that there is no such thing as no residue
fluxing/soldering. Can you be sure that these residues cannot influence
reliability? With over 3000 different solder resists, however many laminates
and who knows how many fluxes on the market; who could possibly know? The
matrix is huge!
New SIR testing methods will tell you if they work together to produce
reliable products.
