Ray,
I haven't been on the handle end of a soldering iron for awhile but at my
former company we just got the crystals with the ground wire on them. It was
my understanding from the manufactures that it was not a good idea to solder
directly to the can. If you check with the manufacturers of the xtals your
getting, ask them if they can furnish it with the top can ground wire. This
wire is welded to the can during the manufacturing process and doesn't hurt
the xtal inside. Just my $.02 on the subject.
