Hi Ray,

ISO doesn't tell anyone what specifically to do.
It only states that it *shall* be done.

4.8 Product Identification and Traceability -

     "shall establish and maintain documented
procedures for identifying the product by
suitable means from receipt and during all
      stages of production, delivery,
      and installation."

As you can see, it doesn't tell you anything.

I did work in a company that after 10 years was
in the midst of coming up with a new numbering
system because the old ones were running out.

Here's what their problem was:

All part numbers were
1st character was a "P" for page,
the next 5 characters were numbers 0 thru 9,
and the final character was letters A thru E, for
different paper sizes, and O for obsolete.
Example: P12345B was on a B size paper.

If a BOM was applied to this drawing, the BOM
had the same number. Whenever the drawing or
BOM got REVed, both got REVed. So a spelling
error being corrected on the BOM would cause
a bump in the drawing REV also.
Terrible system.

That left 1*10*10*10*10*10*6 possibilities,
or 600,000 separate part numbers. It took only
10 years to gobble them up.

They shifted over to something based on the EEM
numbering system where categories of parts are
given a 4 digit prefix, followed by a 6 digit
number, then finally a 3 digit number for a
total of 10^13 possible separate part numbers.
They had started talking about putting a letter
on the end to signify the REV level at about the
time that I left. Example: 1234-123456-123A

I have seen at least one company that did a
variation of this theme and added an additional
4 digit field as a date code for year and week.
Example: 9741-1234-123456-123A
Adding any letter of the alphabet onto the last
digit would bump you up to 2.6*10^14 possible
numbers.

Still another company I've seen put in a code
in the part number that meant something within
the company.

I didn't have the secret decoder ring for that one. ;)

Regards, Doug
