Hey Technetters,
My company is beginning to look into the benefits to be had by having our
assemblies tested at the assembly house. My question is, "what should my
questions be?" Our volume is pretty modest; our largest volume assemblies
are in the area of a few thousand a year and that is distributed over
several different orders. We probably have somewhere near 300 different
active assemblies. We go through a quoting cycle for each new purchase so
there is always the potential that we may bounce around several different
assembly houses.
Obviously, I want to make our requirements as generic as possible. Is
there an IPC (or other) spec for this? What kind of tests are typically
done? Simple connectivity? Partial/full functionality? If the latter,
then what are the requirements needed for setup? I understand the
preference for all nets to be access able from the back of the board. What
are the preferred and possible placement grids for the test points?
Any help you could give would be appreciated. I am ignorant -- please
educate me. Any vendor sales pitches can email me directly -- please, no
phone calls.

Thanks in advance,
Don Walker
