We had similar problems and questions to yours about 2 1/2 years ago. We
could not find any facts or users of "Marbles" to reduce dross. I then
had stainless steel covers made which float on the solder in
configurations to mate up with the solder pot and all items entering and
exiting the solder surface. The covers have limited the oxygen to the
pot and have minimized dross buildup. The first eight week after
installation we did solder contamination testing with no unusual
contamination showing. We then dropped back to monthly checks and have
not had any problems.
Good luck and I hope this helps.
