Every system I've worked with eventually ran out of numbers (for
various reasons) and the most robust systems became too complex and
choked the system to death. I've established a simple random number
system with the drawing title as the important identifier, not the part
number. Who can remember what 20 digit codes decodes to the controller
card? Keep it simple.

Good idea in principle, but think of the cost, paper wise and magnetic
media wise, of storing all those digits. Then think of the possibility
of
error when you have long, complex part numbers.

Keep it simple
