My environmental engineer tells me that the listing for lead dust given
by the American Conference of Governmental and Industrial Hygienists,
usually referred to by their acronym, ACGIH, is 0.15 milligrams per
cubic meter for the Time Waited Average (TWA). The listings of the
ACGIH are recommendations from a body of experts only. However, their
values are often used in the laws of various states, provinces,
countries, etc. The particular value above is the limit set by the
government of the province of Ontario, Canada.

In voluntary blood lead testing there has never been a case reported in
our plant, at least within the 15 years that the senior plant nurse has
been here, where the levels were anywhere near the limit. The main
concern is for the facilities people and wave solder machine operators
who change out the solder pots. Airborne lead oxide dust is much more
of a concern than lead metal itself.

Some lead trivia:
~1% lead inhaled is kept by the body
~10% of what is swallowed is kept
90-95% goes to the bones
~50% stays 2-3 years
a normal person has <0.4 ppm in the body

I have sent copies of this to the two people mentioned in the requesting
e-mail.
