If you are interested in various technologies for making holes conductive, including direct metallization, you are invited to attend the free IPC-US EPA Design for the Environment (DfE) Making Holes Conductive (MHC) Seminar at the Best Western Airport Inn (2425 S. 24th Street, ph 602/275-3131) in Phoenix, AZ from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on Thursday, Nov 13. This seminar is being held in conjunction with the Arizona Printed Circuits Association (APCA), which will hold their monthly meeting on the evening of Nov 13.

This DfE MHC Seminar will present the results of two years research on seven MHC technologies: electroless, carbon, graphite, palladium, non-formaldehyde electroless, conductive polymer, and conductive ink. These technologies were tested in actual PWB manufacturing facilities and evaluated for health and environmental risks, performance, reliability, costs, and ease of implementation. This seminar will present the results of this testing and evaluation.

As part of the seminar, there will be an informal session during which PWB manufacturers who have implemented (successfully or not) one of the alternative MHC technologies are invited to talk briefly about their experiences. This is also a call for participants who would like to talk about their MHC operations. These talks are very informal. Anyone who participates is asked to talk about which technology they chose, why they chose it, how the implementation went, what went right, what went wrong, how product was affected (if at all) and what lessons were learned. Normally, no A/V is used.

If you are interested in participating during this MHC implementation session, please contact Christopher Rhodes at IPC (ph 847/509-9700 x306; fax 509-9798; email [log in to unmask]). This implementation session will take place around 3pm on Nov. 13.

In addition to the presentations at the DfE seminar, ten publications from the DfE project will be provided to all attendees. This seminar is sponsored by IPC, the US EPA, and the APCA. It is free to everyone. However, we do ask anyone who plans to attend to register so that we may insure adequate materials and space. If you do plan to attend and have not already registered, please email a message to Star Summerfield ([log in to unmask]).

If you cannot attend the seminar during the day, a very abbreviated summary of the seminar and results will be presented at the APCA meeting. The APCA meeting starts at 5:30 pm on Thursday, Nov 13 at the Best Western. The DFE summary talk will begin at 6:30 pm.

Thank you.
