We are debating the preheating of ceramic chip capcitors for hand
soldering. I know some companies that do it, and others that don't
without any problems. I have heard that this was a necessary evil
when chip capcitors were poorly made, but overkill with today's better
product. It is virtually impossible to meet the chip manufacturer's
recommendation of 4°C/sec max. ramp rate when hand soldering. We
presently preheat the capacitors on a hot plate to 150°F and instruct
the operators to never directly touch the chip body or end caps with
the soldering iron. It is being suggested that we require the
preheating of the PWB and capacitors to a higher temperature. I
realize this makes sense, but it would cost a lot of additional time
and be rough on the operator. I would appreciate any comments, horror
stories, etc.
